Jason,
These are two regani-complex species from the northeastern Brazilian state of
Amapá. The above names are based on photos of 2 species collected by Friedrich
Bitter and published in a book called "South American Dwarf Cichlid. Tropical
Fish Collection 6" by Yamazaki, et. al., and published by Pisces Publishers,
Tokyo (in Japanese) as A. sp. Amapa Bitter I & II..
A. sp. Amapá (Bitter) I is the same species as A. sp. Amapá discussed by
Koslowski in his paper "Ostamazonische Apistogramma, Aquaristische Neuheiten und
Neuigkeiten" (DATZ, 1994, 47(12):781-788). ASG members can get a copy of this
article from me, including an English translation and Koslowski's recent
corrections.
A. sp Amapá (Bitter) II was collected by Bitter & Marco Lacerda in rivers close
to the French Guiana/Brazil border. Lacerda believes that it is A. gossei or a
very closely related species.
